Research
Rhetoric, discourse, and the platforms in between
My research sits where rhetoric and writing studies meet discourse analysis and pragmatics. I work with close reading and with computational methods, and I care about bringing African contexts and decolonial perspectives into conversations that have often left them out.
Areas of specialization
Current projects
Online reviews and platform reality
My dissertation reads TripAdvisor and Google Reviews as a rhetorical genre and uses Baudrillard’s framework of simulacra and hyperreality to show how platforms construct the reality travelers expect before they ever arrive. I am developing this work into a monograph and a set of journal articles.
Medical pragmatics in West Africa
Drawing on my Ibadan research into neurologist and patient interaction in Nigerian teaching hospitals, I am preparing a series of articles anchored in the West African Medical Pragmatics (WAMP) framework.
Multilingual computational pragmatics
This project tests how sentence embeddings (SBERT), dimensionality reduction (UMAP), clustering (HDBSCAN), and topic modeling (Mallet) can support pragmatic analysis of multilingual digital texts.
Digital humanities and pragmatics in tourism
With Lindsay Yotsukura, Frederick John, and Simeon Ajiboye, I co-organized a panel proposal for the International Pragmatics Conference (IPrA) 2027 on how digital humanities methods can open up the language of tourism.
